Additional Tank Data from Mark K 4/1/07
The Tank was announced on 20 November 2003. The earliest pieces had silver frames with black aluminum inserts. Ivory micarta, maroon micarta and black linen micarta scaled variants were announced next, on 16 December 2003. One silver handled piece was made with candystripe scales for a special order. The next variants released were black handled pieces made from T-7075 aluminum rather than the T-6061 that the Dalton shop normally uses. The T-7075 is a harder alloy and Mr. Dalton used it as an experiment to see how it worked for knife handles. It did seem to have one drawback. The T-7075 did not seem to anodize as well as T-6061. The finish seemed to be a bit “spotty�? on some knives and I have been told that the color would actually leech out of the aluminum in some cases. I don’t know whether this is a problem with T-7075 aluminum in general, or if the anodizers just didn’t know how to deal with this different alloy. The problems appear to have been in the dyeing and sealing parts of the anodizing process. There were a few of the black handled pieces done with special inserts, including green bone, Cocabola wood and polished Diamondplate aluminum. The black handled pieces were followed with another group of T-7075 handled pieces in red, but without inserts. With one exception, the black handled and red handled pieces were serialized in the form of 7075-XX. There was a total of 320 “regular�? Tanks made: 203 Silver/Gray pieces, 83 Black T-7075, 1 Black without T-7075 marking, and 33 Red T-7075. Here is a list of “regular�? (not Custom) Tanks – one ofs and small runs:

Following the run of “regular�? Tanks, the Daltons made a small run (41 pieces) of Tank variants that had 3/4 length scales. These were first announced on 05 February 2004. They all had what I would consider "special" scale materials - and quite a few different scale materials were used. All pieces have beadblast blades. Following are the scale materials that were offered to the dealers. Prices varied, depending on the scale material. The wood scales are polished natural wood (not stabilized) with no finishing oil/varnish/etc.

1. Gray handled reverse Tanto was the first release and came out in February 2001.
2. The next run was gray handles and the Wharncliffe blade. That was maybe two - four weeks after the 1st release reverse Tantos.
3. Black handled Wharncliffe blades came out some time later.
4. Last batch was black handles - drilled for pocket clip on both sides and Wharncliffe blades.
Based on this sequence, its not likely that many were made with black handles and reverse tanto blades. We certainly can't discount the possibility that Mr. D. may have had some left over reverse tanto blades and that he installed them in black handles that were made later. The other possibility is an aftermarket blade swap. There are folks out there who will do this to "create" a rare variant. Knowing the history of the knife in question is the only way to get a feel whether a blade swap may have occured.

Additional Tank Data from Mark K 4/1/07
The Tank was announced on 20 November 2003. The earliest pieces had silver frames with black aluminum inserts. Ivory micarta, maroon micarta and black linen micarta scaled variants were announced next, on 16 December 2003. One silver handled piece was made with candystripe scales for a special order. The next variants released were black handled pieces made from T-7075 aluminum rather than the T-6061 that the Dalton shop normally uses. The T-7075 is a harder alloy and Mr. Dalton used it as an experiment to see how it worked for knife handles. It did seem to have one drawback. The T-7075 did not seem to anodize as well as T-6061. The finish seemed to be a bit “spotty�? on some knives and I have been told that the color would actually leech out of the aluminum in some cases. I don’t know whether this is a problem with T-7075 aluminum in general, or if the anodizers just didn’t know how to deal with this different alloy. The problems appear to have been in the dyeing and sealing parts of the anodizing process. There were a few of the black handled pieces done with special inserts, including green bone, Cocabola wood and polished Diamondplate aluminum. The black handled pieces were followed with another group of T-7075 handled pieces in red, but without inserts. With one exception, the black handled and red handled pieces were serialized in the form of 7075-XX. There was a total of 320 “regular�? Tanks made: 203 Silver/Gray pieces, 83 Black T-7075, 1 Black without T-7075 marking, and 33 Red T-7075. Here is a list of “regular�? (not Custom) Tanks – one ofs and small runs:

Following the run of “regular�? Tanks, the Daltons made a small run (41 pieces) of Tank variants that had 3/4 length scales. These were first announced on 05 February 2004. They all had what I would consider "special" scale materials - and quite a few different scale materials were used. All pieces have beadblast blades. Following are the scale materials that were offered to the dealers. Prices varied, depending on the scale material. The wood scales are polished natural wood (not stabilized) with no finishing oil/varnish/etc.

1. Gray handled reverse Tanto was the first release and came out in February 2001.
2. The next run was gray handles and the Wharncliffe blade. That was maybe two - four weeks after the 1st release reverse Tantos.
3. Black handled Wharncliffe blades came out some time later.
4. Last batch was black handles - drilled for pocket clip on both sides and Wharncliffe blades.
Based on this sequence, its not likely that many were made with black handles and reverse tanto blades. We certainly can't discount the possibility that Mr. D. may have had some left over reverse tanto blades and that he installed them in black handles that were made later. The other possibility is an aftermarket blade swap. There are folks out there who will do this to "create" a rare variant. Knowing the history of the knife in question is the only way to get a feel whether a blade swap may have occured.
