Northstar looks like a pretty unique design. Thats the thing I like about DCC, Its not just the same 5 models made with differant handles in huge quantities like some auto's......
What do you guys think? Yea or ney

Sounds like a killer design for sure. I see the serrated section of the blade, however without a thumb stud, I can't tell how it opens. I'd like to see a more detailed pic or some instructions because I can't wait for mine to arrive...Al

Hate to say this, but I'm going to be a nay sayer.
I haven't seen the knife in person, so everything I'm about to say may be totally out of line, and I'm SURE you guys will put me in my place real quick!laugh3
I don't like that DEEP thumb groove on the back of the blade.
I don't like that HUGE sharpening notch between the end of the blade edge and the frame.
AND...I'm not too thrilled at the asking price!
Don't get me wrong on the price thing, Rob makes plenty of knives that I think are worth $280-$300 but this isn't one of those IMO.

I see the knife description on the website says " The scales have been slotted for lashing purposes ...... " Can someone explain this to me , please. There is very little about the design/workings of the North Star that I understand. Dave. ~it's cool

I'm no expert, but I think I've figured out the reason for the deep thumb notch on the blade. Since the liner is what you use to open the knife, it would be hard to get to without that notch. That's how it looks to me in the picture:

I e-mailed Ms. Charlotte about 'the slots in the scales for lashing' and just received this reply,
"THE SCALES CAN BE TIED TO A STAFF SO THE KNIFE CAN BE USED AS A SPEAR HEAD IN AN EMERGENCY"
I personally like this design and can't wait to get my hands on one.So I guess my vote is a yea!

That'd be a big nay for me. #$%^gg 1. NON AUTO 2. Right handed liner lock. My wallet is very happy, it's been awhile since I past a knife up.
I would use a knife to sharpen the end of a spear, not tie a knife to the end of stick. Mr. Moficky save the GPS coordinates of were you lose your knife trying to spear a walleye in Lake Erie and I will try and help you find it. laugh3ILK

I think it is an auto - with the liner being used for both the release and the lock. Possibly something like the Experimental Packer. I hope it is lefty friendly or that a Lefty version is made. I like the idea of a hidden release for a carry knife.

To hell with a temporary, emergency lashing, I want to permanentlly weld a North Star onto my Mister Bill and throw it at skanks rotating on a big-ass disk, like in the circus.Dave.shock0

From the description on the web page I was under the impression that it is a spring assisted blade. I do like the ex. packer release which is pretty lefty friendly. I guess we shall see. ~Mr. Bill ILK

I'm guessing it will be a similar coil spring speed, but by keeping your thumb on it, you could make it open slower or like a normal speed auto if you let it just fly.
Or, you could open up your thumb veins like a river if your not paying attention!

this knife is or can be both a full auto or spring assist .the
assist part actually comes from the liner when it is moved .060 to the left
it releases the blade
by this time your thumb is directly over top of the blade and you can
release it quick or slow or not at all .You are in complete control there is
nothing else like it on the market. If some one took this knife from you
that wasn't familiar with it I doubt they could open it
all in all it is a fun knife to learn to control. RobThe Daltons further explained the release to me. Collectively, a few members pretty much figured the release out. Coil spring auto, the liner lock, holds the tension of the spring. When releasing the liner lock the spring tension transfers to you thumb, which is over the back of the blade. When you sit back and think about it, it's pretty ingenious but yet simple. I'm not sure if such a mechinism has been made before, if not, I can foresee more clones than the cupid. USA ILK

Sorry guys, as far as I'm concerned, it is NOT a spring assist knife, it is a FULL AUTO.
There is NOTHING wrong with it being a full auto. I actually LIKE the idea of a linerlock release auto.
On a spring assist, the concept is to have a spring to help you OPEN the blade once you start to open it. Not to have your thumb hold back the blade from opening.
Having to press the linerlock to open the knife, is the same as having to press a button, lever, bolster, or scale, as in all other autos. Spring assists have no buttons, it's the blade itself being moved by hand, that engages the spring.
Yeah, I know I'm a PITA. laugh3

What is everyone's take on the newer improved version, the V2?

So who has actually handled one? I am very intrigued with this design. Something totally new in the knife world as far as I know. Impressive that the creativity keeps on flowing out of the Dalton shop. Does he do all of the design or are there others there?

I doubt if any Northstars have left the shop yet. The pics we have seen so far have have been with unanodized frames, so they may not have come back from the plater yet.
Rob does all the designs himself. I'd say he is likely the most prolific knife designer alive - the John M. Browning of switchblades. :D

Just heard from Charlotte that some of the Northstars will be shipping soon. This one has the clearcoat anodize finish.

I prefer the look of the blade to the v1.. I might have to order one, but will prolly wait to see if one w/ a stainless or Ti handle comes out..

I've got the V1 (waiting on a blue V2). The Northstar is bigger than I expected. Very beefy and extremely solid lockup. Unfortunately, it is not lefty friendly.

I got the V2 in Clear on Monday. I love it. It is one of my all time favorite Daltons. The action is slick and smooth and yet it looks like Dalton's version of a Sebbie. It's definitely a keeper - a no bull shit combat carry knife. If you get one, you'll love it.

For anyone still on the fence about the action on these knives, I've uploaded a video of my newly arrived Flash. Same action as the Northstar, so you can see how this works. Personally love it, easy to use and fires HARD. Enjoy!
